Frequently Asked Questions

Sail Network is a regional youth sailing program that connects junior sailors from clubs across the Hunter region through monthly training days and shared experiences. It supports skill development, confidence, and long-term participation in the sport.

Our sessions are best suited to intermediate sailors looking to build skills, meet new people, and stay engaged. We also welcome experienced sailors who want structured training, race-focused drills, and a supportive peer environment to keep growing in the sport.

Sail Network is open to sailors aged 10 to 18 and are ready for the next step. You don’t need to be racing at a high level — but you should be confident launching, sailing around a course, and returning to shore without assistance.

If you’re unsure whether Sail Network is the right fit, feel free to get in touch — we’re happy to help!

Yes. Generally participants will be required to bring their own boat to sail at training sessions.

Training days rotate between clubs in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and Port Stephens. Each session gives sailors the chance to experience different venues and meet new people.

A mix of on-water coaching, fun sailing drills, short races, off-water learning, and social connection. Each day is tailored to suit the group and the venue.

Safety always comes first. If conditions are unsafe for sailing (strong wind, storms, lightning, etc.), we may:

  • Delay on-water activity until conditions improve

  • Run land-based sessions (tactics, rules, teamwork, fitness)

  • Shorten the day if necessary

  • Postpone the session only if absolutely required

We’ll do our best to continue the program in some form, and we’ll communicate any major changes via SMS and email to all registered participants and parents.

No — it’s designed to support and complement what clubs already offer. Sail Network strengthens the overall pathway by connecting sailors across clubs and classes.

Yes! We’re always keen to partner with local clubs. Hosting a session is a great way to promote your venue and build regional connections.

You should be a member of your local sailing club (that you usually participate at), but you don’t need to sign up for any additional memberships.

You will be required to register to participate in training sessions. After registering, you will automatically become a temporary member of Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club to meet compliance reasons.

Sail Network is proudly supported by Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club, who provide the booking platform, facilities, and resources that help make our program possible. While you’ll see the NCYC logo on the registration page, rest assured — all events listed there under Sail Network are part of our regional youth program, not NCYC’s regular sailing courses. We’ve filtered the page so you’ll only see Sail Network training sessions.
