About

What is Sail Network?

Sail Network is a regional initiative designed to strengthen and sustain youth sailing across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and Port Stephens. The concept is inspired by a 2010 era YNSW Training Program and has been reestablished by program coordinator Jack Buchan in collaboration with local sailing clubs, Sail Network offers monthly training days and shared experiences that connect young sailors from a variety of classes and clubs.

“It’s about more than coaching — it’s about creating a regional sailing community where young sailors feel supported, inspired, and part of something bigger. We believe that when young sailors feel supported and connected, they’re more likely to thrive — on and off the water.”

Sail Network exists to connect and empower young sailors across the Hunter region. Our mission is to foster a vibrant youth sailing community by creating regular opportunities for skill development, social connection, and shared experience. Through monthly training days and club collaboration, we help sailors grow their confidence, expand their peer network, and stay engaged in the sport.

Who’s it for?

Sail Network is open to sailors aged 10–18 who are actively participating in dinghy or keelboat sailing. Whether you’re racing regularly or just starting to find your footing, the program welcomes a range of abilities and classes.

We encourage participation from:

  • Sailors looking to meet others their age from different clubs

  • Sailors transitioning between classes or disciplines

  • Clubs seeking support to retain youth engagement

  • Families wanting to stay connected to the sport beyond their home club

Why it matters

Too often, young sailors drift away from the sport due to lack of connection, confidence, or local opportunities. Sail Network addresses that by:

  • Offering consistent, low-pressure coaching and sailing experiences

  • Creating a strong peer network across the region

  • Encouraging club collaboration rather than competition

  • Reducing barriers for under-represented or isolated participants

When young people see familiar faces and feel like they belong, they’re more likely to stay involved in sailing — and become the next generation of racers, volunteers, instructors, and leaders.

How it works

Once a month, Sail Network hosts a regional training day — rotating between different host clubs to spread opportunities and showcase our region’s diverse sailing venues. Each day includes on-water skill-building, team activities, and social time, all delivered by qualified coaches and experienced volunteers.

Participation is casual — come to one session or join them all. It’s flexible, friendly, and built around fun and connection.

Led by the community

Sail Network is proudly led by Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club, but it’s built for and with the whole Hunter sailing community. We work closely with clubs, coaches, and parents to ensure the program complements local efforts and supports shared growth.

Whether you’re a sailor, parent, coach, or club official, you’re part of the network.
